A Journey Through Light and Shadow

The Beginning
I am James Wright, and although my background may not be the norm, if you decide you'd like to join me at one of my Quiet Photographer workshops you will immediately not merely see the relevance of my photographic journey and how it is helping you with yours, but feel it.

My journey began at school when an insightful art teacher recognized that I was unhappy in the classroom and suggested I take out a camera. This was followed up with the developing and printing process in the darkroom. With a classroom full of students and very limited time to guide me I was left to my own devices leading to a great deal of trial and error, many frustrations and failures - yet I kept going.

I could see the potential and freedom of photography.I built a darkroom at home – even waiting until the last train had passed before printing to minimize any movement in the enlarger. Although I loved my photography, I had no commercial outlet for it and ended up in an engineering role.

The Offshore Years
This took me offshore (on oil rigs) and here was where I spent all my down-time writing letters to potential clients and following them up when on shore leave. I had an opportunity to shoot a Superbike event at my local circuit and my career developed from there.

Since then, I have spent my working life shooting for numerous global brands travelling all over the world on assignments. Although my main subject matter was motorcycles, landscapes and scenery regularly formed part of the brief – something I loved.

The Norway Moment
One of my commissions in 2014 brought me to Norway where the location check was simply breathtaking – every corner serving up yet another awesome vista.
We shot in most inspiring scenery and this is where I met the most amazing people, found my peace and re-kindled my passion.

Guidance With Presence, Patience & Heart

The Realization
Having run a professional business for over 30 years and teaching photography to dozens of students, I realized the enjoyment I get from helping others along a journey that can be extremely challenging to navigate without guidance.

Although the industry and technology has changed immeasurably since my early days, I realised I have spent tens of thousands of both pounds and hours developing my craft and learning how to deal with every situation imaginable from the searing 45 degree heat of deserts to -25 degree Scandinavian winters where returning to the client with no images is not an option.

I recognised just how valuable my journey has been and how it will help YOU to the next level in your photographic journey.

The Teaching Approach
As the founder of The Quiet Photographer I realised my most meaningful images happened when I slowed down.
When I listened. When I let nature lead. When I am un-hurried. Today, I help others reconnect with their creativity, their camera and themselves through the practice of mindful photography in the landscapes that changed my own life: the valley of Valldal.

Teaching Philosophy
Teaching is approached in a structured yet calm and peaceful manner. Most important to me is for my students to learn at a pace that suits them, whatever their level.

I always set out with a specific end goal – a goal that is established by the students themselves and which gives them a measure of improvement and a feeling of progress, purpose and fulfilment. Challenges will inevitably throw themselves at you whatever category of photography you enjoy, knowing how to overcome them is part of the skillset of a professional photographer.

The ever-changing conditions in Norway make Landscape Photography in this region particularly challenging yet so satisfying and beautiful. Learning how to deal with these challenges is imperative to YOU taking the best photos possible in the conditions – whatever they are.

Why Valldal? Why This Valley?

Valldal — A Quiet Valley That Changes You
Tucked between fjords, forest trails and mountain passes, Valldal is one of Norway's calmest and most soulful photographic landscapes with a deep, rich history.

Here, light moves gently. Colours soften and deepen. Silence becomes its own teacher.

Every season brings its own emotional palette:

  • Spring: Renewal, freshness, quiet beginnings

  • Summer: Light, freedom, playful creativity

  • Autumn: Depth, mood, reflection

  • Winter: Stillness, simplicity, inner quiet

This is your canvas. Your breath will slow. Your eye will open. Your photography will shift.

Experience That Teaches

They say experience is an expensive tutor, and yes, it is. I also believe that experience is a more thorough tutor. My personal photographic journey developed through an absolute passion for photography, being challenged and learning how to overcome these challenges. A passion that remains to this day.

What This Means for You
Having seen countless photographs across all levels, I know exactly what is required to deliver images that work. This may appear straightforward but different commissions require different approaches, and it is my ability to not only understand and interpret each brief but to adapt and deliver, that puts me in a position to pass on those skills to others.

Life in Valldal

Beyond Photography
Whenever I am in Valldal I can be found (or not) down by the river, fishing on the fjords, enjoying the endless trails, overnight stays in 'Hytte' with like-minded friends, searching for wildlife or cross country skiing along the seemingly endless trails or downhill skiing in the stunning locations of Stranda and Overøye (I'm terrible at it but just try to make the glass of whisky in front of the log burner worth the effort) or just 'being' – but you can rest assured, there is always a camera close at hand.

The Approach to Life
This connection to place, to seasons, to the rhythms of nature – this is what infuses every workshop. This is what you'll experience alongside the technical guidance. This is what makes The Quiet Photographer different.
